YORUBA PEOPLE
The Yoruba people are a West African ethnic group that mainly inhabit the western parts of Nigeria, Benin, Togo, and even Sierra Leone. The Yoruba constitute about 52 million people in Africa and over a million outside the continent.
In diaspora, those of Yoruba ancestory can be found in Santa Lucia, Brazil, Cuba, Grenada, and Trinidad & Tobago. Recent generations have freely moved to the U.K, U.S and Canada.
As the population of people of Yoruba ancestry in diaspora grows exponentially, it has become increasingly important that we get our children to learn our language and culture
YORUBA CULTURE
The Yoruba culture was originally an oral tradition, and the majority of Yoruba people are native speakers of the Yoruba Language.
As at a decade ago, the number of Yoruba speakers was estimated at 30 million. Yoruba people form their sense of group identity around a number of cultural references and practices recognizable by members of the group both within and outside their region of influence. Prominent among these references, is the tracing of the entire Yoruba body to roots formed in Ile-Ife, an ancient city near the left bank of the Niger River projecting upward from the Bight of Benin and linked to the Atlantic
